BID Member Spotlight – The Hummingbird Collective

The Hummingbird Collective is a unique and welcoming independent retail store located in the heart of Retford’s Market Square. Situated within the former NatWest Bank building at 21 The Square, the store has quickly become a much-loved addition to the town centre, offering visitors the opportunity to discover an eclectic collection of gifts, homeware, artwork, jewellery, clothing, stationery and much more, all under one roof.

Behind the business is founder Nicola Hudson, an inspiring entrepreneur whose determination, creativity and resilience have helped shape The Hummingbird Collective into the success it is today. Having previously enjoyed a legal career spanning 28 years, she built a career in the events industry through her business Little Hummingbird Events. Nicola faced a number of personal challenges, including a period of illness that caused her to reflect on the future and explore new opportunities. Rather than allowing these obstacles to hold her back, she used them as motivation to create something entirely new.

The name ‘The Hummingbird Collective’ holds significant sentimental meaning for Nicola, with strong personal connections to both her husband Ian, and her late mother. Over the years, the hummingbird became a symbol of love, support and resilience, making it the perfect inspiration for a business built around community, creativity and connection. Today, the name serves as a lasting tribute to those important influences in Nicola’s life and the journey that led her to create The Hummingbird Collective. The first Hummingbird Collective store opened in West Yorkshire in November 2023, introducing Nicola’s vision of creating an indoor marketplace that brings together a wide range of independent retailers within one welcoming space. Recognising a gap in the market for a destination where customers could browse products from numerous small businesses in a single location, Nicola developed a concept that combines the charm and variety of a traditional market with the comfort and convenience of a permanent retail setting.

Building on the success of the original store, The Hummingbird Collective expanded in 2024 and arrived in Retford in August 2025. Looking beyond the scaffolding and seeing the building’s potential, she recognised an opportunity to create something truly special in one of Retford’s most prominent and historic town-centre buildings. Today, visitors entering the Retford store are greeted by a calm, welcoming atmosphere that immediately sets the store apart. Every corner of the space reflects the passion and dedication invested by Nicola personally along with the support of her team, creating an environment that encourages customers to slow down, pause, browse and enjoy the experience. For many visitors, the store has become more than just a place to shop. It is somewhere to discover unique products, seek inspiration, and even stop by for a friendly conversation. Nicola’s members have dubbed it their “Happy Place”.

The Retford branch is home to more than 45 independent businesses, each bringing their own personality, creativity and expertise to the collective. From handcrafted gifts and artisan products to home décor, fashion accessories and thoughtful keepsakes, the range available ensures there is something for everyone. Whether customers are searching for a special gift, the perfect card and wrapping paper, or simply treating themselves, The Hummingbird Collective offers a true one-stop-shop experience.

A key part of the store’s success is the dedicated team who bring the concept to life every day. Store Managers Alison and April have been with the business since the early days of The Hummingbird Collective and have played a significant role in its growth and development in Retford. Both are passionate advocates of independent retail and are talented creatives, with their own collections featured within the store. Nicola has the ability to recognise enthusiasm, knowledge and commitment to help create the warm and welcoming environment that customers have come to love.

Alongside the retail offering, events remain a significant part of Nicola’s vision. One of the business’s proudest achievements to date was the successful delivery of the Retford Country Market on 24th May, organised by Little Hummingbird Events. The event was the result of over a year of planning and represented a major milestone in Nicola’s career. Bringing together traders, businesses and visitors from across the region, the market received overwhelmingly positive feedback and demonstrated the significant contribution independent businesses can make to the town centre’s vibrancy.

For those who have not yet visited, The Hummingbird Collective is well worth discovering. Combining a carefully curated selection of independent retailers, a beautiful historic setting and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere, it has become one of Retford’s most distinctive shopping destinations and a fantastic example of independent business thriving within Bassetlaw.

The Hummingbird Collective can be found at 21 The Square, Retford, DN22 6BN. They are open daily between 10am – 4pm. You can get in touch by calling 07955 273923 or emailing Nicola at nicola@littlehummingbirdevents.co.uk.
