BID Member Spotlight – North Notts College

North Notts College (NNC) provides hands-on learning in the heart of Worksop and Retford. NNC is a part of the RNN Group, an education and training provider that also includes Rotherham College, Dearne Valley College, and University Centre Rotherham. They provide a range of courses for school leavers and adults looking for further training in specific skilled courses. These courses and apprenticeships are designed with local employers, ensuring relevant content is covered. The college was originally founded in 1930 as the Worksop County Technical Institute.

North Notts College consists of two campuses, with the main one being in the heart of Worksop and their sister site located in Retford. Both campuses boast modern facilities and are easily accessible by public transport, with the nearest trains only a short walk away. The main campus covers a range of subjects, from Hair and Beauty to Construction and Engineering to name a few. The Retford campus, based at the Retford Education Centre, specialises in Media Make-Up and Sports courses. In addition to these campuses, North Notts College also offers Access to Higher Education courses within Healthcare at The Bridge Skills Hub, also located in Worksop town centre. Their main campus is currently undergoing extensive renovation work following a £4 million bid to accommodate its new T Level delivery. This means there are some exciting new changes and opportunities ahead, with work scheduled to be completed in September 2024.

Along with mainstream education, the college offers specialised learning to students with special educational needs or disabilities. This is referred to as the FLEX department, short for Flexible Learning Experience. Bespoke pathways have been created for learners with SEND or high needs. These include Personal Independence, Horizons, Pre-Internships, and Supported Internships. Personal Independence is for students with complex or high needs, offering support to become independent in a safe environment. Horizons is a programme introducing students with low self-esteem or those deemed vulnerable to experience taster sessions from a range of sectors. Both Pre-Internships and Supported Internships introduce students to the reality of working in a range of sectors, covering Health & Beauty, Construction and more. By the time they have finished their internship, students should be ready for full time employment.

Last year, North Notts College started offering T Levels, which are 2-year qualifications designed to give students aged 16–19 a head start towards the career they want. T Levels offers a mixture of classroom learning and an industry placement of 315 hours (45 days), where you will be fully integrated into the workplace. At NNC, T Level subjects include Construction, Education and Childcare, Digital, Engineering and Manufacturing and Health and Science. Completing one of these courses will allow you to progress into a skilled occupation, higher/degree level apprenticeships and Higher Technical Qualifications. The college also offers a variety of courses for adults wanting to further develop their skills or try something new.

The college is holding an open day on Saturday 23rd March from 10am – 12pm. Pop along to discover your next steps toward your future.
