The wider Irizar Group was originally founded in Spain in 1889 by José Antonio Irizar, initially manufacturing iron fittings for carriages before evolving into one of the world’s leading passenger transport vehicle manufacturers . Today, the Group operates globally across the passenger transport, electromobility, electronics, connectivity and energy sectors, with a presence in more than 90 countries and production facilities across Spain, Morocco, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa.
Irizar UK was established in August 2011 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Spanish business, originally operating from Claylands Avenue in Worksop. Following years of successful growth, the business outgrew its original premises and purchased land in Blyth in 2016 with ambitions to develop a larger, purpose-built facility. While external challenges created delays and obstacles along the way, the business remained committed to its investment in the area and officially relocated to its new Blyth premises in February 2026. The company celebrated the official inauguration of the new site on Wednesday 29th April 2026, welcoming guests and partners to mark an important milestone in the business’s journey. North Notts BID’s CEO Sally Gillborn MBE was delighted to attend the inauguration and see first-hand the scale of investment and ambition behind the new facility.
Today, Irizar UK supplies and supports a wide range of vehicles to customers across the country, working with small and medium enterprises, fleet operators and local authorities. Their product offering includes high-capacity coaches for schools and large groups, premium touring coaches, accessible PSVAR-compliant vehicles and luxury VIP coaches for corporate hire. They are also continuing to expand within the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market through the ‘Irizar ie bus’ and ‘ie tram’ range, helping support cleaner and more sustainable transport solutions for the future.
Sustainability sits firmly at the heart of the business and wider Irizar Group. The company is deeply committed to environmental responsibility, ethical business practices and innovation. Their commitment to sustainability can also be seen through initiatives such as “Izir”, Irizar’s circular economy brand, which gives a second life to excess materials from the manufacturing process by transforming them into new products including laptop bags, glasses cases, textiles and clothing. Irizar UK has also recently launched a local tree planting initiative in partnership with a major bus operator, pledging to plant a tree with every vehicle sale as part of their continued commitment to sustainability and supporting the local environment.
Despite operating on an international scale, Irizar UK prides itself on maintaining a close-knit and approachable working culture. The Blyth site is home to a dedicated team of fewer than 20 employees, made up of both local staff and individuals from further afield, including Scotland and Portsmouth. The team includes Andrew Blundell – Managing Director, Julie Hartley – Sales Director, Mark Jordan – Operations & Aftersales Director alongside many other talented individuals who contribute to the company’s continued success.
Irizar UK is also currently developing a new parts business, with future ambitions to create apprenticeship opportunities and continue investing in skills and employment within the area.
